In-Ground Food Digesters
After many trial and errors most of the villas have settled with the Villa Earth Tower food compost digester system, a custom-built solution designed to close the loop on food waste right here in our own backyard. Simply deposit your organic kitchen scraps into designated bin. That’s it!
For those preferring minimal involvement, urban composting services are highly recommended. These involve professional pickup of waste, which is then composted off-site. In Bali, for example, Urban Compost offers reliable collection for homes and businesses; contact them via WhatsApp at +62 822 3535 4411 for details.
Transform plastic drums into In-Ground Digesters. Here is the process:
Preparation: Drill specific airflow and migration holes into the drums.
Installation: Dig a deep cavity in the garden and line it with a steel mesh. This mesh is crucial—it prevents the soil from collapsing while leaving wide enough gaps for earthworms and beneficial microbes to enter and exit freely.
The Engine: The drum is buried, creating a cool, dark environment perfect for decomposition.
Best is to use the 50 liter industrial-grade HDPE plastic drums with air-tight, double-seal screw tops. Instead of sending these massive containers to a landfill, we decided to give them a permanent second life.
A typical family of four cooking fresh meals generates enough organic peelings and scraps to fill one of these 50-liter towers every month. If you don’t add EM4 into the mix, a natural, cold-composting method underground, nature needs about six months to fully break that food down into rich soil.
To keep the cycle running perfectly without pauses, a villa needs a circuit of six composting towers.
The Secret Ingredient (EM4): To ensure everything breaks down efficiently and without odor, you can add EM4 (Effective Microorganisms). This is a natural probiotic for the soil that accelerates decomposition and prevents rot. See the communal team for obtaining EM4
Harvesting: Once a bin is full, seal it and let it sleep for six months. When you reopen it, the waste has vanished, replaced by dark, nutrient-dense humus. The gardener then harvests this "black gold" to nourish private garden or the communal grounds.
This system is a win-win-win:
Zero Transport
Zero Smell: Because the specialized screw-top lids seal hermetically, there are no odors and no pests.
Thriving Gardens: The "worm tea" (liquid nutrients) produced during the process leaches directly into the surrounding soil, constantly feeding the roots of the plants in your villa garden.
