Our Healthy Ecosystem Benchmark: The Presence of Dragonfly Nymphs
The clear, vibrant water in our pools and reed beds is a complex community of life working in harmony. At the very heart of this natural balance is the dragonfly.
The dragonfly lives two lives. The creature you see flying is only half the story. For months, or even years, it lives underwater as a nymph—a masterful aquatic predator. The presence of these nymphs is our ultimate sign of success; it tells us our water is clean, oxygenated, and thriving.
Hidden beneath the surface, the dragonfly nymph is the guardian of our entire underwater ecosystem. It is a top predator in this micro-world, hunting small creatures like shrimp fry and other invertebrates. This crucial role fosters a diverse and stable community, preventing any single species from overwhelming the system. Water clarity is the beautiful result of this hidden, healthy balance.
This is precisely why you will not find fish in our living water. We consciously design our system without them, as most fish would prey on these essential dragonfly nymphs, breaking the critical link that keeps our water world in equilibrium.
When the nymph completes its underwater life, it crawls out of the water and transforms into the beautiful flying dragonfly we all recognize. As an adult, its role as a guardian continues in the air. Flying with incredible speed and agility, it is a natural master of pest control, hunting and eating hundreds of flies, mosquitoes, and other flying insects every single day, making our environment more comfortable for everyone.
Every feature of our Living Water System is a deliberate invitation for the dragonfly to thrive. Our lush reed beds, filled with a variety of emergent aquatic plants, provide essential "ladders" for nymphs to climb out to begin their adult lives. Within the reed beds and pools, the pebble bio-filters and varied surfaces create a rich underwater landscape for nymphs to hunt, hide, and grow. Above the water, sun-warmed rock islands and bamboo perches, and other plants, offer perfect resting spots for the adults.
